Michigan State football is in the midst of an overhaul.

Coach Mel Tucker commented on the current state of the Spartans on Tuesday afternoon — a team that’s expected to have at least 33 new scholarship players for next season.

“We’re trying to get the program to where it needs to be as fast as we possibly can and do it efficiently and effectively based upon our values and the culture that we have here in our football program,” Tucker said on WVFN-AM (730) in Lansing, via the Detroit Free Press. “So the portal is a major part of that at this time.”

The transfer portal makes up for nearly half of those newcomers. As of now, Michigan State is expected to bring in 19 players in its 2021 recruiting class and 14 players for the portal.

The latest addition from the portal is cornerback Ronald Williams, who is transferring from Alabama. Williams is one of six transfers who had 4-star status coming out of high school, according to 247Sports.

The Spartans are coming off a 2-5 campaign during Tucker’s first season in charge. Last year was always expected to be a transition year, but COVID-19 heightened Tucker’s challenge. Still, Michigan State was able to secure high-profile wins over rival Michigan and Big Ten West champion Northwestern.

Michigan State opens its 2021 schedule at Northwestern on Sept. 4.
