The entire state of Wisconsin is celebrating Barry Alvarez’s final day in the Badgers athletic department.

On Wednesday, June 30, Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers announced that the day will be knowns as “Barry Alvarez Day,” honoring the former head football coach and athletic director in his final day with the school. The proclamation was signed by the governor.

“It’s hard to overstate the impact and legacy of (Wisconsin athletic) Director Barry Alvarez,” Evers wrote on Twitter. “I’m proud to declare today Barry Alvarez Day, and on behalf of the state of Wisconsin and Badgers everywhere, I wish Director Alvarez all the best in his retirement.”

The dedication celebrates Alvarez’s over 30 years of work as a head football coach, administrator and athletic director in Madison. He’s had an incredibly successful run at the University of Wisconsin, so honoring him with his own day seems appropriate in the state.

Alvarez also released a video thanking fans for their continued support over the last three decades on his last day with the school.
