Whoever is under center when Ohio State takes on Minnesota on Sept. 2 in the season-opener will have some pretty large shoes to fill.
They will be replacing Justin Fields. Right now, the person who could be replacing Fields is not yet determined. It’s a three-man race to take that spot and certainly has dominated the Buckeyes’ fall camp discussion.
As expected, whenever the quarterbacks talk, the competition comes up. Jack Miller, a redshirt freshman out of Arizona, was the one put in the hot seat today and was tasked with discussing the competition.
Jack Miller on Ohio State's quarterback competition: “We all push each other every single day, and I think this is how you get the best out of yourself is being in a competition like this with guys that are just as good as you. I think it’s how you get better.”

Right now, the battle is between Miller, C.J. Stroud and Kyle McCord. Right now, it seems like the three-man race is competitive but in a friendly way.
Jack Miller: “We’re all three pretty close, and we’ve always been pretty close … I think you definitely have to have a level of competitiveness on the field, for sure. But at the same time, that is your teammate and he is on your team and you’ve gotta treat him like that.”

While the race is a big topic for the quarterback candidates, coach Ryan Day has to answer these sorts of questions and make a decision on who will play.
Miller was part of Ohio State’s 2020 recruiting class. He appeared briefly against Nebraska and scored a touchdown via a 21-yard run.
Meanwhile, McCord, a New Jersey native and true freshman, comes in without any college football experience. His mindset appears to be more toward development than competition.
The third quarterback in this race is Stroud, who is also a redshirt freshman. He appeared in three games in 2020, including the CFP semifinal game against Clemson.
There’s plenty of competition to be had and should be interesting as things unfold.
