Scott Frost has his man under center for Nebraska’s season opener against Northwestern.

Just over a week away from that Week 0 showdown in Dublin, Frost announced his decision Thursday night on Huskers Radio. In the end, Frost went with Casey Thompson – the transfer quarterback out of Texas – to start against the Wildcats.

When describing what set Thompson apart, Frost admitted “there’s no substitute” for meaningful playing time in college football. Thompson has that after throwing for 2,100 yards and 24 touchdowns at Texas last season.

Frost also sees fewer mistakes coming from Thompson and a much better ball from the QB in fall camp as opposed to the spring (Via Husker247):

“There’s no substitute for having played a lot of college football. And there’s been fewer mistakes from him. It really was a big jump too from spring ball to fall and I think that thumb was probably bothering him worse than he let on. He’s throwing it way better in the fall … He threw it well in the spring but he has a lot of zip on it now.”

Frost did go on to address the full QB room and feels comfortable at the position. He mentioned 5 total guys, including FSU transfer Chubba Purdy,  3rd-year player Logan Smothers and a pair of young players.

Frost also said he wouldn’t be surprised if multiple guys play in the game:

“Chubba just keeps improving. Logan is clearly better than he was last year. Seeing a lot of good things out of (Heinrich) Haarberg. And Richie (Torres) is a super talented young guy. So I really like what we have at that position. I wouldn’t be surprised if more than one play. But Casey’s going to take the first rep.”
