Kevin Willard is reportedly bringing on an assistant to his staff with plenty of ties to the DMV. ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported the news on Monday.

The assistant in question is former Virginia Tech assistant Mike Jones. Jones has been the associate head coach at Virginia Tech for the last two seasons.

Before coming to Virginia Tech, Jones was the basketball coach at DeMatha High School in Maryland for 19 years. Jones had the opportunity to coach players like Hunter Dickinson in high school. Dickinson played for Michigan this season, but has since entered the transfer portal. Jones also worked with USA Basketball in the past as well.

Maryland basketball finished 22-13 in the first year under Willard. The Terps made the NCAA Tournament and won their first game against West Virginia 67-65. It wasn’t a long run in the tournament though as the Terps lost to No. 1 overall seed Alabama in the next round.

The Hokies did not make the NCAA Tournament, but did accept a bid to the NIT. Virginia Tech drew Cincinatti in the first round and lost by score of 81-72.

This move to bring someone like Jones in who knows the DMV well should be taken well by Terps fans.
