Michigan State is in the midst of a mid-season coaching search following the firing of head coach Mel Tucker this week.
The Action Network’s Brett McMurphy reported a list of candidates for the job on Thursday, and it includes a sitting Big Ten coordinator. In addition to some of the usual names that have been bandied about for the job — Duke’s Mike Elko, Pitt’s Pat Narduzzi — McMurphy reported that Wisconsin defensive coordinator Mike Tressel is on the shortlist.

Tressel spent 13 years with Michigan State in a variety of roles, mainly concerning the defensive side of the ball. Tressel started at MSU in 2007, the same year that Narduzzi took over as defensive coordinator.
He left East Lansing in 2021 to join Luke Fickel’s Cincinnati staff as defensive coordinator. The two years before he landed at MSU, he served on Cincy’s staff as a linebacker coach and special teams coordinator for Mark Dantonio.
This past offseason, Tressel followed Fickel to Madison, where he currently serves as the defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach for the Badgers.
