LISTEN: Former Ohio State LB Bobby Carpenter shares thoughts on Urban Meyer’s future

Wednesday was a trying day for Buckeye Nation as the program appeared to be facing a very uncertain future.

The news cycle kicked off with an explosive report by Brett McMurphy detailing former Ohio State assistant Zach Smith’s history of domestic abuse and reporting that Smith’s ex-wife, Courtney Smith, contacted Urban Meyer’s wife, Shelley Meyer, about the abuse.

For much of the day, there was only speculation about how the situation would be handled in Columbus. Meyer put himself and the school in a difficult position by strongly denying a prior McMurphy report that he had been alerted about a domestic incident involving the Smiths. During the whirlwind of speculation, Bobby Carpenter (2002-05) gave an interview on SiriusXM ESPNU encouraging the Buckeye faithful to let the situation play out before rushing to judgement.

“There are a lot of things that look really bad right now, and a lot of things that are mounting up and piling up,” Carpenter said. “But that’s taking everything at 100 percent truth and I don’t know that it is, and I’m not saying it is, and I’m not here to say that it is. Not necessarily poke holes, but Ohio State hasn’t issued a statement yet.”

Carpenter’s comment was made prior to OSU’s announcement that Meyer had been placed on administrative leave.

“I don’t know, you don’t know, I’m not sure anybody really knows who knew what, when they knew it and what exactly happened,” Carpenter said.

While that’s determined, OSU will do so with Ryan Day as acting head coach.
