Love it or hate it, Purdue’s “IU Sucks” chant is a staple of Boilermakers football.

During every kickoff, Purdue fans make sure to chant “IU Sucks” just to keep the rivalry with Indiana alive every Saturday. It is one of those little things that keeps fuel on the rivalry fire for the two schools, but the chant may receive a bit of a change for Saturday’s game.

After being rumored that the chant may be changed earlier in the week, Purdue Athletics tweeted out a graphic Wednesday encouraging all fans in attendance to embrace the change. The change is a simple one and encourages fans to replace “IU” with “Cancer” during the game against Ohio State.

The “Cancer Sucks” chant would be in honor of Purdue alumni and superfan Tyler Trent and all those affected by cancer. Trent is a cancer survivor who is still battling the disease, and his story will be featured on ESPN’s GameDay Saturday.

When it comes to the revised chant, Trent is all for it and believes it would be cool for everyone in attendance to participate. He compared the potential “Cancer Sucks” chant to the Iowa Wave that has taken college football by storm and believes it would be a special moment for all in the cancer community.

Mike Carmin with the Lafayette Journal & Courier shared Trent’s thoughts:

“It would mean a lot to the cancer community in general,” he said. “Just seeing the impact the Iowa wave has had across the nation and it would be great if “Cancer Sucks” makes a similar impact like the wave.”

Saturday’s kickoff for Purdue’s game against Ohio State is set for 7:30 pm EST on ABC.
