Ben Mason preparing for big role on both sides of the ball after switching positions

Sounds like the Wolverines are going to get a lot of use out of Ben Mason this season.
That should come as no surprise after Jim Harbaugh’s comments during the spring. Harbaugh mentioned then that Mason, who served as a fullback in 2018, was going to be used on both sides of the ball at three different positions. With his new role, Harbaugh predicted around a 60-70 snap workload each game for Mason.
Now that fall practices are underway, it sure sounds like the plan is to feature Mason in a variety of ways. According to Zach Shaw with The Michigan Insider, defensive line coach Shaun Nua discussed Mason’s work recently. Nua likes what he has seen so far and believes Mason is ready for a big role along the defensive line:
“It’s very legitimate,” Michigan defensive line coach Shaun Nua said of Mason’s success. “His mindset, the way he’s attacking the new position, new changes has been very, very good. So he’s going to have a big role.”

To this point, Mason is listed on the two-deep depth chart along the defensive line. It sure looks like he will have a unique role with the Wolverines, and time will tell how successful he can be.
