Maryland football will have some new additions to its uniforms this season.

In a release tweeted out by the university, Terrapin football players will have the option to replace the name on their nameplate with a variety of words aimed at raising awareness about racial justice. Along with that option, Maryland helmets will feature a new decal and warm-up shirts for players to choose from:

On Saturday night at Northwestern, players will have the option to replace their names on their jerseys with various expressions of solidarity, including Equality, Unity, Respect, Justice and Empathy. Players will also have the option to wear warm-up shirts with the same expressions and two others, “I Got Your Back” and “Speak Up.”  A helmet sticker — designed by student-athletes — will express solidarity through the phrase “One Terp.”  These expressions were created directly by University of Maryland student-athletes and reflect a department-wide commitment to social justice.

The trend is a growing one across the B1G and the country at large. Michigan announced and unveiled a new “Equality” helmet decal on Thursday that will be seen this season.

Maryland will kick off the season Saturday evening against Northwestern. Tune into BTN at 7:30 pm EST to see the new look and catch all of the action.
