The two trends overlapped again as across the board five-star and number-one ranked class of 2022 quarterback Quinn Ewers of Texas’s South Lake Carroll High School has picked Ohio State over everyone else, including Tom Herman’s Texas Longhorns.
Ewers had been verbally committed to the Longhorns for a couple of months before re-opening his recruitment. He reportedly had serious interest in Alabama, Auburn, Oklahoma, and Texas but in the end, the Buckeyes beat the best to land him.
Ewers explained some of his rationale for picking Ohio State and its traditionally stacked quarterback’s room over everyone else:
“Just their whole demeanor and how they carry themselves,” Ewers said of the Buckeyes. “They’re always doing things right on the field and off as well. Just the way Coach Day and Coach Dennis hold themselves to a much higher standard. They’re always going to be up for the National Championship and just how they develop their quarterbacks and their players.”
It was nothing personal against the Longhorns, Ewers said, but the program did not have what he was looking for:
“I loved the University of Texas and it had nothing bad towards them obviously, but I just felt like it wasn’t the right fit for me right now and I just realized that and I looked into Ohio State pretty hard and I realized that was the right spot for me to be,” Ewers explained.
The 6-foot-3, 195 pound Ewers is finishing up his junior season for the Dragons and will play his senior campaign next year before matriculating to Ohio State.
