Report: Minnesota reached out to Indiana’s Race Thompson hours after entering transfer portal

New Minnesota head coach Ben Johnson isn’t wasting any time in trying to build a roster that can compete in the B1G.
Just a few hours after Indiana starting forward Race Thompson entered his name in the NCAA transfer portal, the Minnesota native heard from the Golden Gophers. The news was reported by Marcus Fuller of the Star Tribune.
Thompson is one of four Hoosiers to enter his name into the NCAA transfer portal since Archie Miller was fired as the head coach. Al Durham, Armaan Franklin and Parker Stewart have all entered their names into the database and are exploring their options outside of Bloomington, as well.

It’s a quick impact for Johnson, who was officially introduced as the next head coach of the Golden Gophers on Tuesday. But he made it clear that he doesn’t want to do much waiting, he wants to build a strong B1G program quickly.
Bringing Johnson back to Minnesota would be a start.
Thompson was a do-it-all player for the Hoosiers who brought plenty of energy to the floor. He averaged 9.1 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game while shooting 51.5% on the season. The Minnesota native just completed his junior year with IU.
With the NCAA’s blanket waiver for winter student-athletes, Thompson would have two years of eligibility to use at Minnesota.
