Only sixteen teams remain in the mix to win the 2019 national championship. Three of those teams are from the B1G.

It was a wild weekend in the NCAA Tournament — as it always is. There were several upsets and a few exciting moments that highlighted the last four days of college basketball. And yet, most of the teams that advanced to the second weekend are top four seeds.

Sometimes, the cream rises to the top.

Only two remaining teams were seeded outside the top four spots — No. 5 Auburn and No. 12 Oregon. As the experts might say, this year’s brackets are awful “chalky.”

With only 16 teams left and a few days until March Madness resumes, college basketball expert Andy Katz updated his power rankings for the remaining teams in the tournament. All three B1G teams fit inside the top 10.

Here’s how Katz ranked the 16 teams left standing:

  1. North Carolina
  2. Gonzaga
  3. Duke
  4. Virginia
  5. Tennessee
  6. Purdue
  7. Florida State
  8. Michigan State
  9. Texas Tech
  10. Michigan
  11. Auburn
  12. LSU
  13. Kentucky
  14. Houston
  15. Virginia Tech
  16. Oregon

Purdue is ranked the highest of the B1G teams, probably because of the way it dominated reigning champion Villanova in an 87-61 win. Michigan State comes in at No. 8 after a 20-point victory over Minnesota and Michigan had no trouble with Florida in a double-digit victory.

Sweet Sixteen games will resume on Thursday and continue into Friday. You can check out the schedule and broadcast information for those games here.
