Connor Stalions' high school team loses 60-0 in first game as acting head coach
Connor Stalions’ debut as a head coach didn’t exactly go as planned.
Stalions was hired as the defensive coordinator at Mumford High School in Detroit earlier this offseason. On Friday, it was reported he would serve as the team’s acting head coach in place of William McMichael, who recently suffered a “mild stroke.”
Mumford lost 60-0 on Friday night to Hamady High School. While Mumford does seem to be out-matched from a talent perspective this season (it lost 47-6 in its opener), Stalions also reportedly made some questionable coaching decisions in this game.
According to the Detroit News’ David Goricki, Stalions decided to go for it on 4th down on 6 occasions — and failed on all 6. In 1 instance, per Goricki, Stalions decided to go for it on 4th-and-20 from his own 30-yard-line. That decision set up Hamady with excellent field position and allowed it to take a 20-0 lead late in the first quarter.
Hamady ended up with a 40-0 halftime lead after Stalions called for another 4th-down attempt on 4th-and-5 from Mumford’s 22-yard line late in the half. Mumford’s pass was then picked off and returned for a touchdown.
McMichael told CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd on Friday that the timeline for his return to the sidelines is “unknown,” so it’s possible Stalions will continue to serve as the program’s acting head coach in the coming weeks.
