Connor Stalions is now serving as the acting head coach at Detroit Mumford High School, according to a report from CBS Sports.

The former Michigan staffer at the heart of the sign-stealing scandal had been a volunteer defensive coordinator for the Detroit high school team until its head coach, William McMichael, suffered a “mild stroke” last week. McMichael confirmed to CBS Sports that Stalions is leading the team in his absence.

McMichael entered the hospital on Friday, Aug. 30, and stayed there for 3 days.

Detroit Mumford began its season last Thursday with a 47-6 loss. The program went just 1-8 last season and 1-9 the year prior. It faces Hamady High School on Friday.

Stalions resigned from his Michigan post last year following allegations over a sign-stealing scheme that he was allegedly the architect of.

He’s currently under NCAA investigation. Michigan received an official Notice of Allegations from the NCAA last month, just days before a Netflix documentary featuring Stalions was slated to release. A draft of the NOA that was reported on by ESPN last month alleges that Stalions appeared on Central Michigan’s sideline in disguise during the Chippewas’ Week 1 contest against Michigan State in 2023.

Stalions denied any wrongdoing in the Netflix documentary. And Detroit Mumford’s coach told the Detroit News around the time Stalions joined the program that the NCAA investigation did not impact their operation.

“I’m not worried about it,” McMichael told the Detroit News. “What happened with the NCAA doesn’t concern us here at Mumford. He comes here every day and gives 120%, and the kids all love him and we’re all learning from him.”
