Competing for a B1G title and a spot in the College Football Playoff is every team’s goal entering each season. Only a few squads have a realistic chance of accomplishing that feat, though.

Earlier this week, ESPN’s Heather Dinich provided a preview of the B1G teams that will have the best shot to compete for a league crown and receive a bid to the College Football Playoff. There are five teams she believes could have a legitimate chance to make a run in 2021.

Dinich tabbed Ohio State as having the best chance to return to the College Football Playoff, which would mark a third-straight year for Ryan Day and the Buckeyes. Here’s what she had to say about OSU:

The Buckeyes have won four straight conference titles and are favored to do it again, but coach Ryan Day will have an unproven starting quarterback replacing Justin Fields. The five signal-callers on the roster have combined to throw just three career FBS pass attempts. Whomever earns the starting job will make an immediate impact — for better or for worse — with games at Minnesota and home against Oregon to start the season.

Listed with an “outside chance” to earn one of the four bids were Indiana, Wisconsin and Iowa. All three teams return a lot of talent from last year’s squad and could potentially challenge the Buckeyes for a B1G title and a spot in the field.

Penn State was included in Dinich’s “don’t forget about” category, indicating that the Nittany Lions could have a bounce-back year in 2021. Last fall, James Franklin’s team finished with a 4-5 record, but it seems unlikely PSU will suffer a similar fate this year.
