Following a wild Week 8, a number of teams were shaken up across the various rankings system.

Most notably, Wisconsin suffered a shocking upset on the road against Illinois. While that loss by the Badgers was the worst of the weekend, they were not the only ranked team to lose. Michigan also lost against Penn State, though that went down as a road loss to a ranked team.

After the dust settled, ESPN’s Bill Connelly revealed the updated SP+ rankings following Week 8. Ohio State remains locked in at No. 1 on the system, just ahead of No. 2 Alabama. Oklahoma and LSU round out the top four.

Here’s where the other B1G teams landed in the Top 25:

  • No. 7 – Wisconsin
  • No. 8 – Penn State
  • No. 14 – Michigan
  • No. 15 – Minnesota
  • No. 22 – Indiana
  • No. 24 – Iowa

From Connelly, here’s a bit of the rationale for how the system works:

SP+ is intended to be predictive and forward-facing. That is important to remember. It is not a résumé ranking that gives credit for big wins or particularly brave scheduling — no good predictive system is. It is simply a measure of the most sustainable and predictable aspects of football. If you’re lucky or unimpressive in a win, your rating will probably fall. If you’re strong and unlucky in a loss, it will probably rise.
