Greg McElroy was recently asked about the decision to move this year’s Penn State vs. Michigan State game to an indoor venue during his Always College Football Podcast.

Traditionally a game that has been played on campus between the two sides, the Nittany Lions and Spartans will play a primetime matchup on Black Friday in the 2023 season. With the primetime kickoff, the game was moved to Ford Field — an indoor stadium for the Detroit Lions — to account for any potential late-November conditions at night.

To put it simply, McElroy is not a fan of the location move, even with the understanding of the potential for nasty weather in the Midwest at that time of year and the B1G’s agreement to not force programs into primetime action late in the year.

“I’m okay with it being played on Black Friday, I’m not fine with it being played at Ford Field,” said McElroy. “And we’ve discussed the B1G’s situation with Ohio State, Penn State and Michigan how there’s kind of an unwritten rule or it is written but they don’t talk about it that they don’t play at night in November. And I get that.

At the end of the day, McElroy wishes the league would lean into the potential for wild playing conditions as one of the staples of B1G football:

“Look I know it’s cold up there… I get it. But to me, what makes B1G football awesome are the elements,” McElroy explained. “That you might have to play at Wisconsin in 2 inches of snow. That’s unique… When I think about Michigan — the state of Michigan… in late November — I think snow, I think frigid temperatures and I think tough people that are going to go out there shirtless, paint their chests and just bare it.”
