Jim Knowles is expected to become the next defensive coordinator at Penn State, according to a report.

That news comes from a somewhat unlikely place: Oklahoma play-by-play man Toby Rowland:

Rowland would perhaps be in-the-know as Oklahoma has been linked to Knowles over the past couple of weeks. Previous reports indicated that Oklahoma was willing to pay $3 million annually to bring Knowles to Norman, but it seems he’s chosen Happy Valley — and per Rowland, an even higher pay bump — instead.

This new deal will likely make Knowles the highest paid defensive coordinator in college football history. Last season, LSU’s Blake Baker was the nation’s highest-paid coordinator at $2.5 million according to USA Today.

For Ohio State, Knowles’ departure is a big loss. He helped build arguably the country’s top defense over the last 3 seasons and ultimately contributed to Ohio State’s first national championship since 2014.

For Penn State, this is a huge victory for James Franklin and Co. as the Nittany Lions look to replace Tom Allen. Luring Knowles away from a Big Ten rival and an SEC power in Oklahoma is a significant accomplishment for Penn State.

This report comes in the midst of Ohio State’s championship celebration. Nothing has been confirmed by Knowles or either university involved, but an official announcement could be coming soon.
