Whatever happens on Saturday, Michigan/Ohio State won’t be a big upset in 2022. The teams face each other with both ranked in the top 5 of the AP poll for the 13th time.

It’s not always such an apparently even matchup, but then part of what makes a rivalry special is that anything can happen. Take these 10 upsets — the biggest in the series. We went by AP poll ranking, and the top 7 games on the list feature an unranked team knocking off a foe in the top 13 of the AP poll. The next 3 games are matchups where both teams were ranked.

Here are the 10 biggest upsets — plus a bonus game — in the history of the Ohio State vs. Michigan rivalry.

Bonus) 1969: No. 12 Michigan 24, No. 1 Ohio State 12

This game isn’t technically one of the 10 biggest upsets, but it was the biggest upset of a top-ranked team in the series, and that was good enough to give it a mention. The first Woody Hayes/Bo Schembechler matchup was one to remember — particularly for Michigan fans. By taking down unbeaten and No. 1 Ohio State, Michigan not only won the Big Ten and knocked OSU out of the national title picture, the Wolverines knocked Ohio State out of any bowl game based on the rules at the time. Michigan had 6 interceptions and the game was scoreless in the second half.

10) 1995: No. 18 Michigan 31, No. 2 Ohio State 23

Michigan rushed for 381 yards — 313 by Tim Biakabutuka — en route to stunning the No. 2 Buckeyes. Michigan led 10-9 at the half and stretched the advantage to 31-15 in the 4th quarter before holding on for the win.

9) 1996: No. 21 Michigan 13, No. 2 Ohio State 9

For the second time in 2 years, a lower ranked Michigan team pulled the upset over OSU. A 3-loss Michigan team went to Columbus and pulled out a win over the unbeaten Buckeyes. Michigan trailed 9-0 at the half, but Brian Griese came off the bench to rally the troops, largely by virtue of a 68-yard TD pass to Tai Streets.

8) 1982: Ohio State 24, No. 13 Michigan 14

This upset stung for Bo Schembechler and the Wolverines. Schembechler claimed that OSU linebacker Marcus Marek was imitating UM quarterback Steve Smith’s cadence and caused a faulty snap that led to a Michigan fumble. The game was tied at 14 in the fourth quarter, but 6 turnovers ultimately doomed the Wolverines.

7) 1952: Ohio State 27, No. 12 Michigan 7

Ohio State QB John Borton stunned the Wolverines with 3 touchdown passes. This was Woody Hayes’s second season, and the victory was his first over Michigan.

6) 2001: Ohio State 26, No. 11 Michigan 20

Ohio State coach Jim Tressel’s first game in the rivalry was a heart-stopper. In beating Michigan in Ann Arbor for the first time in 14 years, OSU raced out to a 23-0 halftime advantage … and then held on for dear life. Jonathan Wells had 3 TDs for the Buckeyes.

5) 1950: Michigan 9, No. 8 Ohio State 3

This was the infamous Snow Bowl, in which an unexpected storm caused the Big Ten to give Ohio State the option to cancel the game. Such a cancellation would have clinched the Big Ten title, but the Buckeyes elected to play. The teams punted 45 times. Michigan, despite not gaining a single first down, capitalized on a pair of blocked punts for the upset win.

4) 1981: Ohio State 14, No. 7 Michigan 9

Art Schlichter led a pair of scoring drives for the Buckeyes, who outlasted a Michigan squad led by all-everything receiver Anthony Carter, in part because the game was played in a snowstorm.

3) 2004: Ohio State 37, No. 7 Michigan 21

A 6-4 Ohio State team played spoiler against the 9-1 Wolverines, with Troy Smith having a big game. Smith rushed for 145 yards and a score, and Ted Ginn returned a punt for a touchdown. Michigan led 14-7 after the first quarter, but the Buckeyes controlled the game the rest of the way.

2) 1939: Michigan 21, No. 6 Ohio State 14

In the oldest game on this list, highly regarded Ohio State jumped out with a pair of first quarter touchdowns from Don Scott. Michigan answered with touchdowns in quarters 2, 3 and 4 to steal the win. In the game’s final minute, Michigan ran a fake field goal that was the difference in the game, with Fred Trosko scoring the winning touchdown.

1)1993: Michigan 28, No. 5 Ohio State 0

It’s the biggest upset in the history of the rivalry, and it was a beatdown. Michigan went 10-2-1 against OSU coach John Cooper, but this one stung most of all. A 9-0-1 Ohio State team was wrecked by a 6-4 Michigan squad. Cooper called it “one of the most embarrassing games I’ve ever been involved with.”
