Urban Meyer might have coached in the B1G most recently, but he doesn’t think the league has one of the top five head coaches in college football. At least heading into the 2020 season.
FOX’s Big Noon Kickoff revealed its top five head coaches in college football entering the season. Ohio State’s Ryan Day crept into the rankings, coming in at the No. 5 spot. He was the only B1G coach included on the list.
Meyer, now an analyst with FOX, does not believe Day, or any other B1G head coach, belongs on the list right now. The former Buckeye head coach revealed his personal top five:
- Nick Saban, Alabama
- Dabo Swinney, Clemson
- Mack Brown, North Carolina
- Ed Orgeron, LSU
- Jimbo Fisher, Texas A&M/Les Miles, Kansas
What do all of those coaches have in common? They’ve all won at least one national championship. That’s what sets those five apart from the rest, according to Meyer.
“I think there’s two things you have to look at,” Meyer said. “No. 1, we all play team sports for a lot of reasons. The No. 1 reason is to win a championship.”
If Day or James Franklin wins a national championship, perhaps they’ll sneak into Meyer’s top five. But, for now, the B1G is left off the list.
