Illinois coach Bret Bielema hasn’t named a starting quarterback yet, but expect that that announcement to come soon.

Bielema said on Monday afternoon that he doesn’t want to have to rotate quarterbacks during the regular season.

That would seem to indicate that one of Brandon Peters, Artur Sitkowski or Matt Robinson will be the full-time starter once that decision is made. Peters is the favorite, but the competition is still ongoing.

Illinois begins its season a week earlier than most of college football, as the Illini will host Nebraska during Week 0. This game was supposed to be played in Ireland but the trip was canceled due to COVID-19.

Peters is entering Year 3 at Illinois, but he has struggled to find a rhythm so far. He completed 48.8 percent of his passes last season for 429 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Sitkowski is a Rutgers transfer who arrived after the 2020 season. He completed 54.4 percent of his passes across three seasons with the Scarlet Knights. He threw for 2,031 yards, 8 touchdowns and 20 interceptions during that span.

Robinson is entering his fourth season with the program. He started one game last season for the Illini and played in two total. He’s completed 48-of-87 passes in his career for 508 yards, 1 touchdown and 1 interception.

Illinois and Nebraska kick off at 1 p.m. ET on Aug. 28.
