Curt Cignetti and Indiana got an early Christmas present on Friday out of the portal in kicker Derek McCormick.

McCormick played football at UL Monroe before transferring to Indiana. This move fills a need at Indiana after Chris Freeman opted to transfer towards the end of November. Freeman hit 29-of-30 extra points and 10-of-14 field goals this season for the Hoosiers.

The former Warhawks’ kicker didn’t play in 2021 and was mainly a kickoff specialist last season. However, he took over the kicking duties this year and hit 10-of-12 field goals and 16-of-17 extra points for UL Monroe.

Cignetti brought in another player to his 2024 class lately. Tyler Cherry committed to Indiana after previously being committed to Duke. Cherry is a 4-star quarterback out of Greenwood (Ind.) Center Grove.

It’ll be interesting to see how Indiana wants to use McCormick since it already has Nico Ridicic on the roster.
