Everything Tom Allen said at his weekly press conference following blowout loss to Iowa
Sometimes high expectations can lead to disappointments, and for Indiana football fans this season started with the bar set pretty high after a 2020 season that saw success in Bloomington that hadn’t been seen in a while.
Hoosier’s head coach Tom Allen held his weekly Monday morning press conference following Saturday’s top-25 showdown between the Hoosiers and the Iowa Hawkeyes that ended with a 34-6 blowout loss to the Hawkeyes.
It’s safe to say he was disappointed.
Things didn’t go as planned for the Hoosiers as the powerful Iowa defense was more than Michael Penix, Jr. could handle, and according to Allen he just wasn’t on his game Saturday.
Coming off an injury, Penix Jr. wasn’t as sharp as he was last season and has some work to do, according to Allen. He added more on the injury situation, along with taking responsibility for not getting the job done.
Here’s more of what Allen had to say:
No players of the week when IU doesn't win. But scout teamers still get them:
OFF Nick Marozas, David Holloman
DEF Maurice Freeman
ST Andrew Turvy#iufb— Zach Osterman (@ZachOsterman) September 6, 2021
Allen said the two personal fouls were "selfish penalties."

Allen on Penix: "He just wasn't himself." Said there's obviously a process to getting back to playing live, which he hasn't done since the injury.

Luke Haggard "got dinged up" before the Iowa game, per Allen. He could have played on an emergency basis but otherwise was out. Would've started if he'd been healthy. Not a long-term concern. #iufb

On Mike Penix more: Allen says there is more Penix needs to work through to get back to being the player people remember. It’s a process, and it takes time, Allen says. #iufb

Upper-body injury for Devon Matthews, who has been released from the hospital in Iowa City and is headed back to Bloomington this morning. Allen not terribly detailed beyond that, but says evaluation Matthews went through over the weekend returned "very positive" results. #iufb

Allen: "James, he punted very poorly his first three punts. … It was his first game of his entirely life. … The more he kicked, the better he got."

Tom Allen pleased with how his defense shut down Tyler Goodson after his 56-yard touchdown. Now, obviously that play still happened but Allen says it is a positive sign for the future. #iufb

Allen: "The buck stops with me. I have to own it. It's my responsibility to get it fixed."
