In Week 1, Indiana came out flat in their 34-6 loss to Iowa. During the game, they lost their starting safety Devon Matthews to an upper-body injury in the first half that was forced to take him to the hospital.

One week ago, Hoosiers head coach Tom Allen gave an update that Matthews is doing well and expects a full recovery while listing him as doubtful for their week two matchup against Idaho.

On Thursday, Allen announced another update on Matthews’ status for the week three game against the No. 8 Cincinnati Bearcats. Allen did say that the progress is promising for Matthews.

Matthews came into the 2021 college season as one of the most experienced defenders for the Hoosiers. Matthews has played in 30 games while starting in the last 22 games in the past three seasons. From his freshman season in 2018 to this past season, Matthews has accumulated 97 total tackles, 65 solo tackles, three tackles for loss, eight pass breakups, and two interceptions.

The Hoosiers will have a tough matchup against the Bearcats, led by Heisman Trophy contender and dual-threat quarterback Desmond Ridder.

Indiana and Cincinnati are set to kick off on Sept 18 in Bloomington at 11 am CT.
