ESPN's FPI predicts outcome of Cy-Hawk Trophy showdown
It is hard to believe, but it has been nearly 2 years since fans had a chance to see the Iowa-Iowa State rivalry.
With the 2020 contest getting canceled due to the B1G’s shortened and conference-only schedule, the most recent Cy-Hawk Trophy contest came on Sept. 14, 2019. That was a Hawkeye victory.
Fortunately, the in-state rivalry is set to be renewed this Saturday in Ames. Iowa will carry a 5-game winning streak against Iowa State into the match, and the Hawkeyes have won 6 of the last 7 in the series when the two sides square off.
Following Week 1 action, ESPN’s Football Power Index has updated the prediction for Saturday’s game. According to the FPI, Iowa State is given a 56.9% chance of winning the game at home.
While the Cyclones are still favored, their chance to win the game has decreased significantly since the preseason. The preseason FPI gave Iowa just a 25.1% of winning the game.
A big reason for that swing in percentages is due to the results from Week 1. Iowa steamrolled Indiana while Iowa State struggled to put away FCS foe Northern Iowa.
