Hopefully, having Ricky Stanzi in Iowa City bodes well for Saturday’s game against No. 10 Penn State.

The former quarterback and Iowa legend was recently tabbed as the honorary captain for the anticipated game against the Nittany Lions. It comes as a good choice, considering Stanzi’s history against Penn State.

From 2008-10, Stanzi and the Hawkeyes went 3-0 against the Nittany Lions, including two top-five upsets in 2008 and 2009. In both of those meetings, Penn State entered undefeated. Penn State enters this year’s showdown 5-0.

As is customary, Stanzi delivered a pre-game message to the team on Friday. He equated entering a game as going hunting and feasting. Unfortunately, the Hawkeyes went empty-handed during their hunt last week:

“Last week you went to hunt. You didn’t get to eat,” said Stanzi. “You should be a little unsettled, you should be hungry. You should be pissed off. You should be a little bit annoyed.”

Fortunately, Stanzi reminded the group that such adversity gives you an opportunity to respond:

“Adversity hits, you can back away…or you can get up, pick up that spear, sharpen that tip, work on the skills, and get your ass back out there and hunt again,” explained Stanzi.

Hawkeye Football shared the clip of Stanzi’s pre-game speech:

Stanzi threw for 7,377 yards and 56 TDs during his Iowa career. He ranks third on Iowa’s all-time list in passing yardage and fourth all-time in passing touchdowns.
