One of the legendary names associated with college football will be in Iowa City for Iowa’s home opener against Miami (OH).

Thursday morning, Iowa announced that former Hawkeyes defensive back and longtime Oklahoma Sooners head coach Bob Stoops will be the honorary captain on Saturday in Kinnick Stadium. Iowa announces an honorary captain for every home game of the season.

Stoops, a native of Youngstown, Ohio, played at Iowa from 1979-82 and was a member of the 1981 B1G title team. He finished his career with 230 total tackles and eight interceptions.

Following his playing career, Stoops jumped into the coaching ranks. He had an incredible 18-year run at Oklahoma, posting a 190-48 record with the Sooners. He guided his team to the 2000 national championship and won 10 Big 12 titles during his career.

Stoops retired after the 2016 season.

According to the release from Iowa, Stoops will accompany Iowa’s team captains to midfield for the coin toss. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET on FS1 on Saturday.
