Iowa could be seeing another coordinator leave the program this offseason. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced Tuesday that Hawkeyes special teams coordinator LeVar Woods interviewed virtually with the club.

Woods, an Iowa alumnus, has been on staff with the Hawkeyes for the past 16 seasons. He was an administrative assistant from 2008-to-2011 and then worked with linebackers from 2012-14 and tight ends from 2015-17. For the past six seasons, Woods has coached Iowa special teams, giving up position duties.

Iowa’s special teams played a big part in the Hawkeyes winning the Big Ten West in 2023. Standout punter Tory Taylor won the Ray Guy Award and was named a unanimous consensus All-American and top Big Ten Punter for a second time (2020). Iowa led the country in net punting (44.17), was eighth in kickoff return defense (15.6) and 10th in blocked kicks (3). Hawkeye kickers Drew Stevens and Marshall Meeder had game-winning kicks at Northwestern and Nebraska in the final seconds.

Though he has only coached at Iowa, Woods has NFL familiarity as a player. After playing for the Hawkeyes from 1998-2000, Woods joined the Arizona Cardinals as an undrafted free agent. He remained in the league through the 2007 season, spending time with the Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions and Tennessee Titans.

Kirk Ferentz recently hired Tim Lester as Iowa’s new offensive coordinator for 2024.
