Kirk Ferentz reached an illustrious landmark Saturday evening, recording career win No. 200 as a head coach in Iowa’s 20-13 Cy-Hawk victory.

Ferentz was understandably asked about that milestone after the game. While it’s a feather in the coach’s cap, he understands no one can achieve that alone and cited feeling fortunate and appreciative.

“I feel very honored and very appreciative, fortunate. Whether it’s football or life, it really doesn’t matter. To do something of significance, nobody gets there alone,” said Ferentz. “Certainly not in football, that’s the way it works.”

The head coach of the Hawkeyes also reflected on arriving in Iowa City around 40 years ago. In the end, Ferentz tried to put the attention back on the players that have contributed to his success.

“I just think about 40-some years ago, landing in Iowa not really knowing where I was quite frankly or what I was about to walk into. The commonality over all this time is just being around good people, good leadership on campus, worked with great coaches and great support staff and most importantly players,” Ferentz explained. “Players win games and that’s never gonna change. You gotta have the right guys.”

While Ferentz has hit 200 wins, he’ll be hoping for a few more this season. Moving forward, the Hawkeyes still have some offensive issues to clean up before the start of B1G play.
