ESPN’s FPI is breaking down Week 1 of the college football season. That includes Michigan’s season opener against East Carolina.

While the Wolverines head into the opener with high expectations and plenty of firepower, the program is likely down 2 coaches to begin the season. Head coach Jim Harbaugh has been handed a self-imposed 3-game suspension to begin the year while offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Sherrone Moore is also expected to be suspended for the opener.

In the end, those suspensions aren’t expected to make a major impact on the outcome of Week 1. According to ESPN’s FPI, the Wolverines are given a 94.9% chance of getting the win and moving to 1-0 to begin the year.

Nothing can be taken for granted for a team with major championship expectations, but Michigan has a talented and veteran roster. While dealing with the absences of coaches is still a big deal, the culture throughout the program should have the team ready to roll.

In addition to the suspension of Harbaugh, Michigan has announced defensive coordinator Jesse Minter will handle head coaching duties in the season opener. This should be a great opportunity for Minter to get his feet wet while leading the Wolverines to open the season.

Saturday’s kickoff is set for 12 pm ET on Peacock.
