This is certainly one way to get things done.

Dave Brandon served as Michigan’s Athletic Director from 2010-14. During that time, Brandon worked to improve and upgrade the athletic facilities of the Wolverines.

One improvement Brandon oversaw was the installation of permanent lighting for Michigan Stadium. He also claims the funding for that improvement was secured in a unique way.

According to Aaron McMann with MLive.com, Brandon appeared on Jim Harbaugh’s Attack Each Day podcast to discuss the renovation. When discussing the lights, Brandon claimed he was able to get ESPN to pay for the renovation. All it took was a simple agreement:

“Everything’s controversial,” Brandon said. “I put lights on the stadium. I got so sick of — we’d play those afternoon games and bring in those portable lights and there’s shadows on the field.

“I actually got ESPN to pay for it. It didn’t cost us a dime. All we had to do was promise to play a night game once a year.”

McMann included that Michigan spokesman Dave Ablauf confirmed ESPN did pay the cost of installing permanent lighting in Michigan Stadium.

It certainly is intriguing that ESPN dipped into its own pocket for the cost of some of Michigan’s renovations. However, props to Brandon for getting the funding where he could.

Those lights will be put to use in Week 1. Kickoff for the season opener against Middle Tennessee State is set for Aug. 31 at 7:30 pm EST.
