There’s no denying Zach Charbonnet is an immensely talented player, but Michigan’s coaching staff is devoted to balancing the workload moving forward.

The true freshman running back was crucial in Michigan’s first two games of the season. He put up 99 yards from scrimmage in the season opener before carrying the ball 33 times in a close win over Army.

Though no injury has been reported for Charbonnet, his workload has since been greatly reduced in a loss to Wisconsin and a win over Rutgers. Of Charbonnet’s 53 offensive touches this season, 45 came in the first two weeks of the season.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh admitted during his press conference Monday that Michigan is focused on limiting the playing time load for Charbonnet and spreading the work around the backfield. Running back coach Jay Harbaugh also discussed that on Wednesday and said he is focused on utilizing every back at his disposal.

Angelique Chengelis with The Detroit News shared Harbaugh’s comments:

“Zach’s good to go,” running backs coach Jay Harbaugh said Wednesday before practice. “We take pride in taking care of the guys. We wouldn’t start a player in a game who wasn’t totally healthy and ready to play at his best. You do your best to make sure the pace guys are playing at is sustainable to try to play 13, 14, 15 games in a season.”…

“Really, you want to make sure that the guys behind him are ready to play and ready to play well at a high level,” Harbaugh said. “If you have that in your room and it comes to life on that Saturday, the second or third or fourth guys are ready to rock and make the most of their opportunities, then you can avoid (playing the lead back that much).”

Through four games, Charbonnet (48) and Christian Turner (31) are the only running backs with more than 12 carries. It will be interesting to see who gets the majority of the workload in Saturday’s game against a tough Iowa defense.
