Jim Harbaugh has reportedly started his dance with the NFL with a Monday interview. However, Harbaugh is also remaining engaged in discussions for a potential contract extension at Michigan.

According to Dan Wetzel with Yahoo Sports, Harbaugh is looking for “unusual termination clauses” if he chooses to stay in Ann Arbor. Those clauses include language granting Harbaugh “immunity from termination” from any potential findings or sanctions related to the multiple NCAA investigations into the football program.

Along with that immunity, Harbaugh also reportedly wants a delay in the start date of the new extension. That would allow Harbaugh to maintain a lower buyout an NFL team would have to pay in order to hire him.

That is significant with Harbaugh’s current buyout recently dropping. As of January 11, Harbaugh’s buyout dropped from $2.25 million to $1.5 million with Michigan looking to move the buyout to $4 million in a new contract.

As for the termination clauses, Wetzel reports Harbaugh is looking to prohibit Michigan’s AD (currently Warde Manuel) from firing him “for cause” related to potential NCAA punishments. Instead, that decision if needed would rest in an arbitration panel.

According to Wetzel, the financial details between Harbaugh and Michigan are “mostly ironed out” but the termination language is a current sticking point. Here is Wetzel’s full report:

Overall, Harbaugh’s future is unclear with reports of a Monday interview with the Los Angeles Chargers. That report also details an expectation the head coach will be deliberate in his interview process and any decision related to his future.
