Matt Barrie disputes notion Jim Harbaugh's departure is to avoid potential NCAA sanctions
Matt Barrie isn’t buying the idea that Jim Harbaugh is finally getting out of Ann Arbor just to avoid potential sanctions for his Michigan program.
That idea has been mentioned by some and gained more steam following reports Harbaugh was seeking protective measures in a potential extension with the Wolverines. According to Barrie, that’s nowhere near as big of a deal for Harbaugh in relation to his ultimate goal of chasing his brother, John, in the Super Bowl ledger.
“I’d say 80% of Jim Harbaugh leaving Michigan is because that 80% of Jim Harbaugh’s ego can’t handle one of two things,” predicted Barrie. “One, that he’s never won a Super Bowl. And two, that his brother has. And by the time next season starts, John Harbaugh might have two Super Bowls.”
Barrie went on to explain Jim’s quick turnaround with the San Francisco 49ers and eventual Super Bowl appearance. However, that Super Bowl trip ultimately ended with a loss to his brother, something Barrie believes eats at Jim on a daily basis.
“That eats at a guy like Jim Harbaugh daily. And the way that it ended in San Francisco where he was essentially pushed out. Then going to Mcihigan for 9 years… What else does he need?” questioned Barrie. “What else did he need to do at Michigan to prove he got it back up to where they believe it belongs?
“…Jim Harbaugh returning to the NFL was all about one thing: The Super Bowl, and he’s got the QB to get it done.”
