Michigan is disputing media reports that it has fired Connor Stalions.

Yahoo! Sports’ Dan Wetzel first reported Stalions’ firing on Friday, and that report was later confirmed by numerous other outlets. However, Michigan contends that Stalions resigned — but was not fired — on Friday.

Here’s Michigan’s statement on the matter, obtained by ESPN’s Pete Thamel:

“Connor Stalions resigned his position with Michigan Athletics this afternoon. We are unable to comment further regarding this personnel matter.”

Stalions is at the center of the NCAA’s investigation into an alleged sign-stealing scandal at Michigan.

The semantics of whether or not Stalions resigned or was fired will likely only be relevant in a potential future legal dispute between the two parties. The end result is the same — he no longer works for the Michigan football program. Previously, Stalions was suspended with pay pending the NCAA’s investigation.

On Friday night, Thamel reported that the Big Ten is also weighing a potential punishment for Michigan. Thamel said the “most realistic” punishment for the Wolverines would be some sort of a suspension for head coach Jim Harbaugh.

Michigan will host Purdue on Saturday.
