Michigan is looking to beef up its wide receiver room after a disappointing season in the passing game. Now, the Wolverines are reportedly adding a former Indiana receiver in the form of Donaven McCulley.

According to Pete Nakos with On3 Sports, McCulley confirmed his commitment on Friday through his agent. Oklahoma and Virginia Tech were also in the mix for McCulley.

McCulley’s college trajectory is a bit unique, to say the least. Originally a 6-foot-5 and 200-pound quarterback prospect, McCulley appeared in 7 games as a QB during his true freshman season with the Hoosiers.

However, he made a quick transition to wide receiver for the 2022 season, and he recorded 169 receiving yards and 2 total touchdowns as a sophomore. McCulley eventually made a jump in the 2023 season, leading the Hoosiers with 48 catches for 644 yards and 6 touchdowns. He also threw a touchdown pass on a trick play, ironically coming against Michigan.

After Curt Cignetti arrived at Indiana, McCulley’s role diminished with just 2 catches for 21 yards and a touchdown in his first 4 games of 2024. He made the call to redshirt and preserve the year of eligibility, eventually leading to the transfer portal decision.

As for landing at Michigan, the Wolverines have an undeniable need after a down season across the board from their WRs. Only 2 wide receivers recorded more than 100 yards receiving for Michigan this season with 2 of the team’s top 4 receivers playing tight end.

Beyond those deficiencies, the team’s overall leading receiver, Colston Loveland, is off to the 2025 NFL Draft. The Wolverines will hope McCulley can pick up some of the big plays in the receiving game for 2025.
