It’s been a few months now since former Michigan defensive line coach Greg Mattison packed his bags and took a job on Ryan Day’s staff in Columbus. But the wounds are still fresh for current Wolverines.

One of the players most upset with Mattison’s departure was defensive end Aidan Hutchinson, saying he had a “feeling of betrayal” when his former position coach traded the maize and blue for scarlet and grey. Things only got worse when Mattison went full Ohio State — referring to Michigan as “that team up north.”

“Coach Matty, you know, he taught me so much when I got here, and I’m not taking any of that away from him,” Hutchinson told ESPN. “But you get a big feeling of betrayal. He told me he was either retiring or he’s renewing his contract, so I’m like, ‘Oh, OK.’

“I thought he was leaving. I was like, ‘Oh, OK, whatever.’ Then he said Ohio State. That kind of makes your stomach, you know, turn a little bit.”

Hutchinson spent just one season under Mattison, but his father also played under the defensive line coach in the 1990s. It made Mattison’s decision to leave for a rival opponent all the more difficult for Hutchinson.

Last season, Hutchinson registered 15 tackles and 1.5 stops for loss while appearing in all 13 games for the Wolverines.
