Sherrone Moore gives timeline for coordinator hires, talks play-calling at Michigan
Sherrone Moore expects to have his Michigan coaching staff in place in the next week.
Defensive coordinator Jesse Minter is expected to follow Jim Harbaugh to the Los Angeles Chargers. Special teams coordinator Jay Harbaugh is expected to do the same. (Though Harbaugh said at his introductory press conference on Thursday no “final decisions” have been made yet.) And after Moore called plays for the offense during the 2023 campaign, his elevation means the Wolverines will need to replace all three coordinators.
During an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show on Thursday, Moore said decisions on all fronts are still being made.
“We haven’t replaced defensive coordinator yet,” Moore said. “We’ve got a few names and people (in mind) to do that. We’ve got a great staff. We’ve got great people on the staff we’re trying to keep, we’re going to try to retain. The staff is starting to shape out bit by bit every day and I think by next week or so we’ll have that in place.”
He’s also still in the process of determining whether he will hand over play-calling responsibilities to whoever takes over as the new OC.
“Going back and forth as far as the play-calling piece,” Moore said. “We’ll appoint an OC here soon, and we’ll talk about that. But developing as a play-caller, that’s taken a long time. It hasn’t just been this year. It’s been years and years I’ve been able to sit alongside some really good play-callers. It’s allowed me to develop my own style. We have a phenomenal staff so it’s not just me, I’m just the one who pushes the go button on game day.”
Under Moore’s watch, Michigan’s offensive line won the Joe Moore Award twice. In the Wolverines’ national championship-winning campaign, the offense scored 35.9 points a game — a top-15 mark in the FBS.
He doesn’t need to reinvent the wheel to keep the reigning champions in contention going forward, but he also plans to put his own mark on the program
“I’m going to run it my way,” Moore said.
