Phil Steele might not want to show his face in the state of Michigan anytime soon.

Last week, Steele raised some eyebrows by putting Mark Dantonio on his list of “must-win mode” coaches in college football. This time, Steele shared an opinion that won’t be popular in Ann Arbor.

The college football expert went on SportsCenter and discussed two teams he believed were overrated. His choices were Michigan and North Carolina.

“When you take a look at Michigan, they’ve got an over-under of nine (wins) coming into it and Michigan only has five returning starters this year,” Steele said on SportsCenter. “They also play a very tough schedule. They’re an inexperienced team taking on Florida out of the box, they play Penn State off a bye, Wisconsin on the road the week before Ohio State, then of course Ohio State.

“They’d have to win two of those games to go over that total out of Las Vegas. So even though Michigan ranks in my top units in all eight categories, I’m going with them.”

Steele brought up a point that by now, is common knowledge among college football fans. The Wolverines had 21 players sign NFL contracts. Needless to say, they’re as inexperienced as it gets in college football.

Interestingly enough, Fox Sports 1 analyst Joel Klatt went on “The Herd” with Colin Cowherd last week and argued why that shouldn’t matter with Michigan because Jim Harbaugh is “the best developmental coach in America.”

Steele’s “overrated claim” didn’t seem to directly oppose what Klatt said. Steele pointed out that odds are, teams with Michigan’s inexperience with four headliner matchups don’t typically win 10 regular season games.

Is Michigan overrated, underrated or even properly rated? Fortunately we only have to wait another two months to find out.
