It may have come as a surprise for many when Jim Harbaugh didn’t just hand Wilton Speight the starting quarterback job after an impressive year in 2016. Rather than allow the incumbent to maintain his post without a challenge, Michigan wanted to start back at square one.

That didn’t come as a surprise to Speight or John O’Korn, the other QB battling for the No. 1 spot on the depth chart. Constant competition is something they’re accustomed do after a few years in Ann Arbor.

Both quarterbacks talked about the ongoing battle for the starting job and how they’ve prepared to be better players in 2017:

It wasn’t until recently that Harbaugh narrowed the QB battle down to two candidates, eliminating freshman Brandon Peters from the top spot, at least temporarily. But no insight has been given on who the favorite is to start in the season opener against Florida.

The way it sounds, it may not be something anyone knows until kickoff on Sept. 2.
