3 takeaways from Michigan State's narrow win over Florida Atlantic
Michigan State held off Florida Atlantic 16-10 on Friday night in East Lansing.
The Spartans struggled mightily on offense in this game, as they were shutout in the 2nd half by FAU. However, the 16-0 lead they built up in the 1st half was enough to get the job done.
Here are 3 takeaways from Michigan State’s win:
Red zone turnovers hurt Michigan State
Michigan State moved the ball well at times in this game, but had a very rough showing in the red zone. The Spartans turned it over 3 times in the red area (including a turnover-on-downs) which drastically lowered their scoring output. Remarkably, Michigan State did not score on any drive that lasted longer than 1 minute.
Michigan State’s offense averaged just 4.8 yards per play — a low number, but one that would have resulted in more points if not for the turnover issues on the night.
It was a disappointing part of Michigan State’s performance on Friday, but is something that should be correctable moving forward.
Aidan Chiles’ debut
Quarterback Aidan Chiles had a rough first game. He threw an interception on Michigan State’s opening play of the game. He threw another one on the 5-yard line midway through the 3rd quarter.
Overall, Chiles completed just 10-of-24 passes for 114 yards. He did rush for a touchdown the first half to give the Spartans their first offensive score of the year.
Running back Kay’Ron Lynch-Adams also made his program debut on Friday night and was more impressive. He rushed for a team-high 101 yards, including a 63-yard touchdown in the first half that ultimately proved to be the game-winner.
Michigan State’s defense was stout
Michigan State’s defense was the reason it won this game despite the turnover woes. The Spartans pulled in 2 takeaways of their own, which they converted on Chiles’ rushing TD in the first half.
Overall, the Spartans allowed FAU to gain just 3.4 yards per play on the night. The Owls also went just 2-for-14 on 3rd down.
Three times in the 4th quarter, Florida Atlantic had a chance to drive the ball down the field and take the lead. And on all 3 drives, Michigan State forced a turnover-on-downs to preserve its lead.
Michigan State will face Maryland in Week 2.
