It was just 30 minutes before Michigan State kicked off against Penn State on Saturday that Spartans cornerback Josh Butler learned his father suddenly died overnight.

Head coach Mark Dantonio called the situation a “pretty private matter,” but confirmed that Butler was told his father had passed away just minutes before the game got underway at Spartan Stadium. Michigan State pulled off an incredible upset, beating Penn State 27-24.

Early Sunday morning, Butler tweeted out an image of his father, Steven, with a message on Twitter.

“Still hard to believe, it just doesn’t feel real, but I know one thing…no matter what he made sure my brothers and I were taken care of. Sacrificed so much and taught us everything we need to know. I’m going to continue to make you happy dad. I love you. RIP DAD see you in heaven.”

Butler, who hadn’t started in a game since late September, was given the starting job at cornerback by Dantonio in Saturday’s game. It was the fourth time he’s started this season.

“It was a jolt to our entire team and obviously to Josh,” Dantonio said Sunday night. “Our thoughts and our prayers are with Josh and his family right now.”

Michigan State linebacker Chris Frey dedicated the win over Penn State to Butler on Twitter.
