Former Michigan State quarterback Connor Cook had to wait until the fourth round to hear his name when he went 100th overall to the Oakland Raiders in the 2016 NFL Draft. His wait was not nearly as long three years later.

In the inaugural XFL draft, Cook went No. 2 overall in the skill position phase to the Houston Roughnecks on Tuesday.

Instead of round, the 2019 XFL Draft has phases, which divide which position group is available for choosing. So Cook can’t stake claim to the No. 2 overall selection in the draft, but he was one of the first two offensive players off the board.

Cook posted 9,194 passing yards, 71 touchdowns and just 22 interceptions in four seasons while playing for Michigan State from 2012-15. He didn’t start any regular-season games for the Raiders, but Cook was pressed into service as Oakland’s starter in the 2016 AFC Wild Card game.
