Mel Tucker says MSU will skip '24-hour rule' to begin prep for Washington
Mel Tucker and Michigan State moved to 2-0 on the season with a 45-14 win over Richmond Saturday afternoon. Normally, that means a 24-hour period to enjoy the win before preparing for next week, but not this time.
At his postgame press conference, Tucker said he told the team — and the Spartans agreed — to wave the program’s “24-hour rule.” Instead, Michigan State’s celebration of the win stayed in the locker room, and the Spartans put the Week 3 game against Washington on the clock immediately after.
“We’re not gonna have a 24-hour rule right now,” said Tucker. “I told those guys, and they all agreed, get your celebration over in the locker room, once you leave the locker room, Washington is on the clock.”
There are a number of reasons for Michigan State to be eager to get to Week 3. The Spartans gave up 397 yards and 4 touchdowns to Michael Penix Jr. a season ago during a 39-28 loss on the West Coast.
That loss to the Huskies was the start of a 4-game losing streak for Michigan State. It was also after that game when Tucker infamously referred to himself as a “horse shit football coach” due to what his team showed on the field.
Michigan State will get Washington at home this time around, but it’s bound to be a tough matchup for the Spartans to come away with a win.
