It sounds like Andre Welch’s career as a wide receiver may be over in East Lansing. But he’ll be trying on a new position in 2019.

According to Michigan State’s updated 2019 roster, Welch will serve as a cornerback this fall, making the shift from the receiver spot. In two seasons at MSU, Welch didn’t catch a pass, but did appear in eight games on special teams and at wide receiver.

Now, Welch will have a chance to make an impact on the other side of the football and could continue to serve as a return man for the Spartans. It’s unclear if those will still be part of his duties this fall.

Not only will Welch be in a different position this season, he’ll also have a jersey change. Previously at No. 88, Welch will now wear No. 23 for the Green and White in the fall.

Michigan State will open the 2019 season on Friday, Aug. 30 against Tulsa at Spartan Stadium.
