Michigan State’s defense may have had the best defensive performance of the weekend for Week 1.

The Spartans defeated Tulsa 28-7, so it wasn’t a shutout, but the rushing defense recorded a statistic that seems otherworldly. Michigan State allowed -73 rushing yards to Tulsa.

There is no typo there, by the way.

Part of the reason for that absurd number is thanks to Michigan State defensive end Kenny Willekes. Willekes recovered two fumbles in the victory and had a sack, 2.5 tackles for loss and 7 total tackles altogether. He was all over the field making an impact.

With that, Willekes earned a high honor:

Of all the teams and players that played in Week 1, Willekes was the Walter Camp defensive player of the week. Quite impressive for the senior standout.

We’ll see what Willekes and the Spartans can do in Week 2 when the team hosts Western Michigan on Saturday, Sept. 7.
