On Saturday, Michigan State was 2-0 and supposed to beat Arizona State.

The Spartans didn’t, though, and lost 10-7. A field goal here, a field goal there. That’s all the team would have needed. And what did kicker Matt Coghlin do?

He went 0-for-3 and missed the potential game-tying kick to close regulation. It would be easy for people to wake up this morning and bash Coghlin, who up until yesterday, was a very accurate kicker in East Lansing.

Coghlin, before his 0-for-3 performance, was 40-of-48 throughout his collegiate career. Any school would take that. And Coghlin’s teammates aren’t forgetting all that he has done for the team prior to yesterday.

“You’re going to miss some. … He was entitled to a miss or so,” Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio said.

Here’s QB Brian Lewerke:

“I haven’t really talked to him yet, but he’s proven himself to be a great kicker here, there’s no doubt about that. “Obviously today wasn’t his day but I still have a ton of confidence in him.”

And here’s LB Joe Bachie:

“We know Matt’s tough. “He’s going to come back next week, he’s going to knock a couple through the uprights – I know that. We need him for the Big Ten season and he knows that as well.”

The Spartans still have belief in their kicker.

As they should.
