Tom Izzo has coached a lot of basketball games during his career, but he hasn’t seen many go against him the way Sunday’s contest went against Purdue. For the Michigan State head coach, it was one of the worst outings of his career.

Purdue took care of Michigan State with a 71-42 victory over the Spartans. It was a decisive victory for the Boilermakers, which have now won four-straight games in West Lafayette over MSU.

Michigan State shot just 35 percent from the floor and had 18 turnovers, including nine from Cassius Winston. The loss, Izzo says, is one of the worst beatings he’s taken as a head coach.

“Probably the worst beating I’ve taken as a coach,” Izzo said after the game. He also gave Purdue plenty of credit for the win, but admitted his team didn’t play nearly as well as it needed to in order to leave Mackey Arena with a victory.

“It sounds like I’m making fun of it it, but I’ll want to jump out of the plane [on the way home],” Izzo said. “I feel embarrassed.”

Sunday’s loss was just the first B1G defeat the Spartans have suffered this year. They were riding an eight-game winning streak headed into the game against Purdue. The Boilers had dropped two-straight road games.

Michigan State fell to 13-4 on the season and is now 5-1 in B1G play. Izzo and company will be back in action on Friday, returning to East Lansing to take on Wisconsin.
