Saturday’s loss had to leave a bad taste in the mouths of the Spartans, including head coach Mark Dantonio.

Michigan State led 7-3 late in the game before a touchdown gave Arizona State the lead with less than a minute to go. However, MSU quarterback Brian Lewerke rallied the offense and moved the team in range for a game-tying field goal.

From there is when things got really weird. Michigan State drilled a game-tying field goal before a video review determined the Spartans had 12 men on the field. After the penalty, the Spartans missed a 47-yard kick as time expired. And if that wasn’t bad enough, the officials missed a clear penalty that should have resulted in Michigan State receiving a third try at the kick.

With all the madness and the bitterness of defeat, one can understand if the Spartans didn’t want to hang around on the field. That also seemed to create an awkward exchange between Dantonio and Arizona State head coach Herm Edwards.

After the traditional post-game handshake, Edwards hung around to chat with his arm around Dantonio. While Edwards appeared chatty and overzealous, Dantonio didn’t seem to want any part in chatting after the loss.

Here’s the odd exchange between the two coaches:
